Raven’s 2 Progressive Matrices
A nonverbal reasoning assessment whose reduced language demand does not mean culture-free measurement.
Performance task The format describes how observations are obtained, not an evidence rating.
What it measures
Reasoning about relationships in visual patterns under a standardized matrix task.
What people do
The assessment uses visual pattern problems. Paper and digital administration require their own authorized materials and instructions.
What the scores mean
Raw performance needs the specified form’s reference system. The score should not be treated as an exhaustive measure of intelligence or converted with another edition’s norms.
This explains the logic of a score. It does not supply a test form, individual result or administration manual.
Development and versions
John C. Raven established the progressive-matrices lineage. Pearson’s inspected Clinical Edition flyer identifies Raven’s 2 as a 2018 publication.
Evidence: (Pearson: Raven’s 2 Clinical Edition Flyer, n.d.); (Spielman et al., 2020)
Reliability and validity evidence
The inspected source is a publisher description, not an independent validation or a technical-manual review. It establishes the intended reasoning construct and edition, not universal fairness or diagnostic accuracy.
Evidence belongs to a version, sample and interpretation. Read the source notes for what was actually inspected.

Where it is used
Assessment and research requiring reduced verbal demands, with attention to appropriate administration and reference data.
Limits and common misreadings
- Nonverbal presentation does not eliminate educational or cultural influences.
- Vision, task familiarity and accessibility can affect performance.
- Different matrix tests and editions are not identical.

Original teaching example
In an original teaching scenario, an investigator replaces lengthy verbal questions with visual patterns. This reduces one language demand but does not demonstrate that the new score is unbiased across educational backgrounds.
Constructed for learning; this is not a result from the instrument’s validation study.
